Fall. You know, that thing about it. Nostalgia everywhere.
Times and people and beings and feelings and places past and presently. And yet to come.
And more feelings. Super mush-y. Mad gooey.
Craving cozy. Settle in. Root down.
The first time in such a long time that I am not just functionally ‘coming home’, essentially to re-up my cache of that home-ness, only until the next time, but instead creating it here for myself, throughout all the seasons. Woah. Close.
These things take time.
That thing about the briskness, literal vitality, mortality, still bare-skinned in the mid-day sun (thank you north carolina), yet the air aware of the impending decay but in full on recognition and ever grateful appreciation of the periodical need for things need to let go, shift, switch places, lift up and shake that ish by the shoulders, to make actual space for the new way, for the transformation. Up-root in order to root-down. Re-order for higher order. Negotiate growth. Progress. Deeper balance. Wider ground. Integration. Words.
Anyway, coming home. Something so known amongst the vast cosmic expanse. All the things.
Here’s something to get to know, to start. Trust me on this one.
PS full credit to Dr. Jim Lee for this gem I am about to shine on you. Good looks, dad. Makes some sense, after all I must get that all-wholistic rooted sense for the science surrounding the fully feeling of all the things from somewhere at some point or from some source of sentiment, right?
WILD how strong our sense of smell ties us to our memories. What we know viscerally. Who we are innately. I am so acutely aware of standing in the wood-worn kitchen of my childhood (one I am lucky enough to still have access to – thanks for staying so grounded ma), both at nights and in the mornings (that’s how this one goes), fall and winter-ly ones in particular (hence the thick knee-high socks and old wood stove on blast, that is if you are in my flash back right now too, hi...), when I smell any step of this sense seeping on the stove. Dark leafy greens straight from the garden, soaking until tender in the heavy-bottomed pot. And all of that priceless, inimitable material inevitably leaching into the water from the green-ness? Here's to a full-circle solution, and genius. *Save the water kids*
GREENS + GRAINS //
in the EVENING
to start, the GREENS –
1 bunch lacinato kale (or whatever greens you're feeling okay – i am totally in love with fresh arugula, and swiss chard, and collards, and mustard greens, and all such things, NUMS)
⅛ c extra virgin olive oil (cold-pressed, organic DUH like all any other things on any superfree list you may see)
⅛ c raw apple cider vinegar
⅛ c raw local honey (OR maple/coconut/agave syrup if you aren't so lucky to have a dad who keeps bees as a lifelong hobby/skill and thus has the best hyper-local immune boosting heavenly honey ever at your disposal, OR if you are all anti-honey, all love here)
1 T liquid aminos
¼ t cayenne
optional : 1 small butternut squash or sweet potato
/ ADD water to large ceramic pot, ~ 1/3 full (3-4 cups) and bring to boil
/ TEAR kale leaves off of stems, or compost such toughness from whatever you're using
/ PEEL and chop butternut squash/sweet potato if using
/ BOIL greens with all other listed ingredients until tender
/ LET sit on low to no heat for a while to soak further, if desired
/ PULL out greens from water *DO NOT DUMP WATER, WOAH* and leave some pieces behind for the next step (just trust me)
/ EAT your greens
/ SOAK the following in the remaining liquid :: aka the ‘GRAINS’ –
½ c fenugreek seeds
½ c steel cut oats
½ c whole millet
¼ c sunflower seeds
¼ c pepitas
¼ c raw buckwheat groats
¼ c goji berries (and/or currants, raisins, golden berries, etc.)
small thumb of raw ginger, peeled and minced
optional : 1/8 c whole flax seeds
/ LET sit overnight, covered
/ MAKE some reishi tea and squeeze some lemon in it and do some other things then go to sleep
/ DREAM SWEET and know you are taking some serious care, and that you will wake up to this mush-y goodness ::
in the MORNING
to finish, the ‘GRAINS’ –
⅓ c almond/coconut/hemp/walnut/cashew/etc milk (yay nuts and seeds and PLANTS)
⅛ c tri-color quinoa
1 small banana, peeled and chopped
1 small apple, peeled and chopped
½ t ginger powder
½ t cinnamon
~ ¼ c regular rolled or quick oats (make ‘quick’ oats by pulsing whole rolled oats in your food processor for a few seconds, that’s all!)
/ ADD all above to what has been soaking all-ready overnight, in order listed
/ COOK over medium to low flame and stir often with wooden spoon or silicone spatula
/ ADD oats, 1 T at a time, to absorb excess liquid, if necessary (don’t worry if it seems thin at first, this super mush will thicken up quickly as it cools and the longer it sits, in any state, so don’t over-do on the oat end, and, actually, turn off the heat before you think it’s done – THIS is the secret, now you know, those of you who take the time to read all this, hi real friends :)
/ SERVE hot off the stove (but in a bowl) with superfree nut butter and fresh berries and raw maca powder (never not this), and/or as suggested below !!
This makes ~ 3 c ‘grains’ (which actually are mostly seeds), which is about 7 servings (at ~⅔ c each), with nearly 10g (plant-based DUH) protein per serving. And that’s before the nut butter is taken into account. ACE.
SO, solo-you is set for the whole week, just store covered in the fridge and reheat on the stove with a little more happy plant milk (‘grains’ will thicken as they cool / seeds will more deeply absorb and internalize any moisture in their vicinity so could maybe use a little liquid love later on), OR just put in a jar to-go with a scoop of fresh tart coconut milk yogurt (aka life) and a big spoonful of superfree maca macadamia butter and really live your fucking life. Just saying.
