forever and always – inevitably a series TBC
SO if you know anything about me, this is basically my life.
Oatmeal is my vice. But OH it feels so good. #firstworldproblems
Every morning, relatively soon after waking, some form of this happens. Stove top, green tea to accompany. Maybe another human of choice.
Typically organic gluten free (duh) whole rolled oats as I don’t have to think ahead, but often gluten free (duh again) steel cut, pre-soaked. These happen to be the star of this day, and this post. Hi.
I will routinely add goji berries and fresh ginger during the soaking process, both very warming and nutritionally dense. This concoction packs the heat, which keeps things moving, energy flowing, mind fluid. Killer for the colder months but please, we can take this year-round, easy. Just adjust what fruit may be in season locally, switch up the gojis to cherries or currants, or basically do what you want.
Local strawberries are like gold in the interpretation above, whereas fresh blueberries crown the baby below. Yums.
So why soak? Steel cut oats in particular are pretty f’ing dense and thus hard to digest. The soaking breaks down their structure a good bit, so they are easier on your tum and conveniently cook faster (same idea). It also helps the goji berries immensely as this serves to re-hydrate them. They’re also pretty tough otherwise.
There is a whole piece about soaking from a deeper nutritional standpoint that I won’t go into in too much detail here. Trust there is a whole lot more to come in light of this subject, entire recipes, ways of living, ways of the world, (the universe!?) in respect to the advantages of such methods.
Briefly though… Essentially the nature of grains (and nuts and seeds) is such that they have defense mechanisms in place in order to survive evolution, primarily called enzyme inhibitors, though there are several others (patience). These work to inhibit (hence ‘inhibitors’) the mechanisms of digestive and metabolic enzymes. These serve to break down the food we eat and assist every biological process that occurs in our bodies, respectively. Pretty much the key to life.
Out in the natural world these inhibitors and other toxic defense mechanisms are broken down when the given grain/seed/nut is amongst proper growing conditions, aka enough water to be able to germinate and continue its propagation. So this is what we’re emulating here. Cradling the little gem, giving it proper nourishment so that it feels safe and comfortable enough to open up to us and share with us its eternal gifts of life.
What a thing to embody. Literally. Talk about karma.
HEART WARMING ginger vanilla Steel Cut Oats (serves 1)
¼ c gf steel cut oats
1 T goji berries
1 t finely chopped fresh ginger (sub ginger powder if necessary)
2-3 inches ripe banana
splash vanilla extract (or pure vanilla powder)
fresh or frozen blueberries (or whatever berries you have, organic of course – do I really ever have to say that?)
raw maca (heavy hand – this is actually my problem)
1 t coconut oil (optional, just feel where you’re at ya know?)
/ SOAK steel cut oats overnight with gojis and ginger in water with about half an inch to spare
/ GO TO SLEEP (dream sweet!)
/ WAKE UP
/ MAKE TEA
/ DRAIN and scoop the slop into a heavy-bottomed saucepan
/ TURN flame on low-medium and add at least a half cup of water (my trick is to use the already boiling water leftover from making tea – genius right?!)
/ ADD a little hemp or almond milk in there if you feel so inspired, it gives you a creamer texture
/ CHOP the banana and add/mash in while cooking
/ ADD splash of vanilla extract and ginger powder if you didn’t use fresh ginger to begin with
/ STIR often, don’t let it actually boil (think ** slow cooked **)
/ ADD more liquid if it starts to thicken too much too quickly
/ KEEP stirring (at this point I have the flame all the way low)
/ REMOVE from heat
/ SERVE with remaining ingredients – nuts, fresh berries, cinnamon, whatever, but don’t forget the maca
NOW do some yoga, or something!
(Old habits die hard.)
